You would think it would be easy having dentures. Well, I have had them for almost 40 years. The first set only lasted 2 years, because my gums shrunk so much. Then it was 5 years. Next time it was 10 years, and a further 10 years. Well, it is coming up for the time when I am starting to think about new ones. These are now 9 years old, and are starting to get loose on me.

Over the years I have tried many different forms, and brands, of adhesive. The most recent one I have been using is Fixodent. The reason being, it was on sale at Wal-Mart, and with my coupon, it was a similar price to their own brand.

Fixodent Complete Denture Adhesive Cream comes in a 2.2 ounce tube. it is white, and has blue and yellow coloring on the front.

I take my dentures out in the morning, and put them in a container of water, with an Equate Cleanser tablet in it. This cleans my dentures, while I am taking my shower. After 15 minutes, or longer, depending on my shower, I take them out of the solution. Next I rinse them under warm water. Then I dry them before using the adhesive.

I unscrew the cap of the Fixodent Complete and then squeeze the tube. I hold the tube above the top dentures, and squeeze a little of the pink adhesive, down the sides of the top dentures, and across the middle. I only put a small amount in each section, because too much would come out of the sides, and then I would have the pink adhesive, in my mouth. That would make me gag. Once done, I then take my top dentures in my hands, and push them into the top of my mouth. I hold them there for a few seconds to make sure they stay.

Unfortunately I cannot do anything about my bottom dentures. My gums have shrunk so much over the years, that only the first bottom plate I had, fitted well. They stay in place without using anything.

Normally the Fixodent adhesive will keep them in place all day, and evening. However, there have been occasions when they have come unstuck. I am not sure if it is because I used too little, or that it just didn't work as well, that time.

Do not put too much adhesive on your dentures, as the pink adhesive doesn't have a pleasant taste. It is minty, but has the adhesive that sticks on your tongue, and it is disgusting.

Upon closing the tube of Fixodent adhesive, the cap has a piece of plastic inside of it, so it goes into the tube, and seals it. Therefore the adhesive doesn't go hard.

Fixodent is as good as Polygrip and Equate brands. I really don't see a difference in any of them. I have also tried Sea Bond adhesive strips, and I had to cut down the sizes of the strips, because they oozed out.

Fixodent state:

"Holds dentures firmly in place; less slipping Prevents stain build-up and bad breath Easy-to-use cream formula for simple application Not to be used as compensation for ill-fitting dentures."

Isn't there something called a "partial"?

It's something like wearing dentures, only it's for one tooth. Of course wearing a denture has all it's own shortcomings, like they have to be taken out and replaced daily along with the cleaning and messy adhesives. And they aren't always comfortable. That's why people get an implant or bridge. But the partial may be the cheapest option.

Veneers versus dentures

If you have teeth that can be saved, then hold on to them and get veneers. For the teeth you are missing you can get partial dentures (cheaper) OR get permanent implants (more expensive).
If you don't have insurance this will be expensive no matter what. Get your yellow pages out, find dentists, and start calling (explain your situation and what you think you need). Many dentist (the legitimate kind) will actually give you a free consultation and their ideas on what can be done.
For a cleaning and some ideas as to where to go, try UCSF - I believe they take people like you for clinical care and assessment

I finally made an appt with the periodontist

Just a reminder. I had an abscess, went to my dentist and he gave me antibiotics and referred me. His plan was to remove 4 back teeth, next time do the other back teeth and last do the front teeth on the lower. He gave me the referral re my top teeth.
The periodontist was very straightforward and had a sense of humor too! He said that he was surprised I didn't have more problems with my teeth than I do. I asked him "If my teeth are so bad why haven't they fallen out". He said because I have a hard head LOL
Anyway he would like to save some teeth so I can have partial dentures, especially for the lower teeth
