According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, statistics show that nearly 70% of adults aged 35 to 44 years in the United States have at least one missing tooth due to an accident, tooth decay, gum disease, or dental fractures.

But there’s no need to go through life with missing teeth. These days, many good alternatives are available. Dental implants and dentures are the most common options. Dentures are false teeth, and although their quality has improved, they’re not ideal for everyone. If not secured with denture adhesive, dentures might slip out of place while eating or speaking, which is embarrassing, and partial dentures might promote infection and decay in other teeth if they aren’t fitted properly, which may increase the risk that you would need a tooth filling on the abutment (adjoining) tooth. That said, dentures may be the best choice for people whose gums and jaw are weak or unhealthy.

If you are missing teeth and your gums and jaw are healthy, you may benefit from dental implants, which are replacement teeth that are implanted surgically into the jawbone. With good oral hygiene, dental implants can last for 20 years or more without the need for replacement. Dental implants are often a popular choice for people who have only one or two teeth missing, but they can be an alternative to dentures if you have several missing teeth. As long as your gums and jaw are healthy, two or more implants can serve as a base of support for several replacement teeth.

Dentures and dental implants

Does anyone have the dental implants that are used with the bottom plate of a set of dentures? Basically, it's 2 little posts implanted near where your bottom 'canine' teeth are and the bottom denture slips onto them to hold it in place. I'm considering having this done when I have to have the rest of my teeth pulled and start wearing dentures and was trying to get some input about it. Anything positive or negative anyone has to say about this, please let me know.

Overdentures

...are dentures with an attachment or "snap"-type feature that attaches into something in the jawbone. In years past, teeth were used, and one part of the attachment was cemented into the root, which was usually leveled at or close to the gumline.
More frequently now, implants are used.
Here's a web page that's well-illustrated showing how the procedure works. It is shown on an upper denture, but more frequently it is done for lower dentures.
(when it's done for upper dentures, it's usually because the patient has a severe gagging problem; the implants allow the palate of the denture to be cut out, as shown here

Dentures are bad news

You can get your dental done right in Costa Rica for about $5,000.
Check out
is a free stateside referral service for select dental clinics in Costa Rica. They know there stuff.
I went in Jan and saved big bucks and got some implants that are as close as you can get to real teeth. If your teeth have already been extracted you can do the implants in one trip with no return.
I could give you all kinds of reasons but just believe me - you do not want dentures.
Hope this helps,
BG

I went to Mexico for dental implants-good choice

Crowns DO come off---have to be careful with them. My days of biting into an apple or corn were over long ago, due to front caps, but I found a GREAT way to get all of your work done at a fraction of the US costs. 26 crowns and a number of root canals, a dental implant, under $6,000. My dentist here said I HAD TO get dentures or implants, estimate for implants $46,000 to $58,000. Cost for THAT in Mexico was $20,000 but when I got there, he said I did NOT need implants. He could have taken my $20K and done the work---I would not have known. Email me if you want info. This one came highly recommended to me, and is just two blocks across the American border at Progresso

Well if you go with dentures...

You have no dental bills because you have no teeth. You can take them out and watch them soak in a glass of water. If you are in a fight or contact sport you can remove them no damage. If you damage them you can mail them in no office visits. They cost a lot less than implants and less painful to install.
